Governor signs Complete Streets bill but vetos Bike Safety bill
During 2008, the California Bicycle Coalition (CBC) sponsored two important bills -- AB1358 (Leno) and AB2971 (DeSauliner) – which were also endorsed by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.
We’re very pleased to report that AB1358 was signed by the Governor on September 30 and will require local governments to include complete streets provisions in their general plan updates. Since the County of Marin, Fairfax, San Anselmo, and Novato already have complete streets policies, Marin County jurisdictions are on the way to fulfilling this legislative mandate. MCBC is working with all other Marin cities and towns to request that they also adopt complete streets policies.
AB2971 would have required Caltrans to evaluate how they spend their safety funds with relation to ensuring the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians, but unfortunately, this bill was vetoed on September 30 by Governor Schwarzenegger.
