Alto Tunnel Discovery Ride

May 18, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

Alto Tunnel rendering
Alto Tunnel Discovery Ride

MCBC and Friends of Alto Tunnel will be jointly leading a family-friendly ride to visit the north portal of the Alto Tunnel. Hear about the history of the tunnel and the community-led efforts to reopen it to bike and pedestrian travel.

We will meet at Edna McGuire ES in Mill Valley at 10 AM, ride over Horse Hill, stop briefly at Peet’s Coffee in Corte Madera, and visit the Alto Tunnel’s north portal. This will be followed by a BYO lunch at Menke Park (there are a number of restaurants nearby for anyone who needs food). Anyone coming from the north is welcome to meet us at Peet’s at 10:45 rather than going over the hill twice.

The whole route will be 7 miles at a gentle pace, though there are some steep sections of road. We will wait at the top of all hills to regroup. Visiting the tunnel portal requires a short walk on a dirt path, so bring closed-toe shoes.

We expect to return to Edna McGuire by 1:30 PM.

Bring: Water, snacks (we will have some on hand), closed-toe shoes, sunscreen.

If you are under 18, or are bringing anyone under 18 on the ride, please print and complete a waiver (linked here) signed by a parent or guardian.
