MCBC Education & Encouragement Safe Routes & MCBC Staff Get LCI Certified – The Gold Standard of Bike Education!
Over the past few months, MCBC staff have been studying diligently and practicing their in-class and on-bike teaching skills tirelessly. To what end, you may ask?
They have been working towards becoming accredited as League Certified Cycling Instructors (LCI) with the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). This nationwide bicycling instructor certification is the gold standard of bicycle education, and we couldn’t be more proud of our staff! Everyone in the class officially passed the program and received their LCI designation in mid-May.
According to the League of American Bicyclists, the goal of becoming a League Certified Instructor (LCI) is “to help people feel more secure about getting on a bike, to create a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and to ensure that people on bikes know how to ride safely and legally.” Participants learn effective teaching strategies and proper ways to instruct on safety skills, avoidance maneuvers, and more. While certification as an LCI is required to deliver certain bicycle safety curriculum, MCBC also considers the education of our Marin County students and adults to be our highest priority. We want our staff to be role models in the biking community and to be able to teach residents to the best of their abilities, both in the classroom and out on the road.
The LCI certification involved multiple exams, on-bike drills and road skills testing, and a 20-hour-long weekend seminar. With the school year winding down and summer fast approaching, we’re excited to put all of our training to work at classes and events around the county. We’re planning to run a Ride With Us series starting in July, where we will offer free group rides with different themes catered to different biking audiences. This training and certification will help us do that more effectively and successfully.
LAB was started in 1880, the same year that the “safety bike,” whose design we still use today, was invented. To learn more about the League of American Bicyclists and what it takes to become a League Certified Instructor, click here.
