Cory's Ride Students in Action in our Community Finding Inspiration at the Marin Teen Girls Conference

Cory’s ride student intern, Milagros Cruz, recently attended the Marin Teen Girls Conference. Read about her experience in her own words and what she gained from attending the conference with over 200 girls from schools across Marin.

On Sunday, March 2nd, I had the incredible opportunity to join my group of Cory’s Ride students from San Rafael High School to attend the Marin Teen Girls Conference at the Embassy Suites in San Rafael. We were joined by over 200 girls from other Marin schools, all coming together for a day of self-discovery, learning, and empowerment. With engaging workshops and inspiring guest speakers, it was a space filled with energy, encouragement, and new perspectives.

We got to choose from various workshops, and my group attended sessions on financial education, consent, and self-defense. The financial education session gave us practical advice on managing money wisely while still enjoying life—like budgeting for fun while also saving for bigger goals or making small choices, like bringing lunch instead of always eating out, to stretch our money further. The consent workshop was an open and honest space where we talked about boundaries, self-respect, and the importance of listening to our feelings. And the self-defense class? That was both fun and empowering—we learned real techniques to protect ourselves, which left us feeling stronger and more confident.

Throughout the event, we heard from incredible women who have found success in male-dominated fields. One of the most moving talks came from Christy Smith, Director of Emerge California. She shared her personal story of growing up in an abusive household, reminding us that struggles are part of life, but we’re never alone in what we go through. Her words were uplifting—she showed us that no matter where we come from, we have the power to shape our futures.

Leaving the Marin Teen Girls Conference, we felt motivated and inspired. It was a day of encouragement, connection, and a realization that we are capable of so much more than we often believe. As part of Cory’s Ride, I’ve seen firsthand how biking builds confidence and independence. After hearing so many strong women share their stories, I feel even more determined to keep pushing forward and encourage more girls to join Cory’s Ride so they, too, can experience the empowerment and freedom that biking brings.
