Off-Road Update San Anselmo Sorich Trail Advocacy Win
On Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, San Anselmo’s Town Council voted unanimously to convert the existing hiker/horse-designated Sorich Park Trail to a multi-use trail that will include bikes. Your support and our collaboration with Access4Bikes made this possible.
Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, wrote in, and encouraged their friends and neighbors to do the same. We especially appreciate Council
members Colbert and Fineman for their clear and compelling cases, which prompted the Council to proceed with a vote and not delay any longer. Out of an abundance of caution to avoid potential conflicts of interest, Council member Kullaway (and Executive Director of MCBC) recused herself from the vote.
This trail has long been considered a critical connection from San Anselmo to San Rafael and destinations beyond due to its gentle grade and alignment with Ridgecrest Fire Road. In 2018, Tom Boss, formerly with Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC), asked the Town to investigate a multiuse path through Sorich Park, but due to limited funds and staffing, the proposal was shelved. In 2023, community member Sandor Lengyel proposed several trail alignments for multi-use paths to the San Anselmo Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
San Anselmo staff can now collaborate with Marin County Open Space (the agency that owns most of the trail) on the next steps for converting Sorich Park Trail to multi-use. They will continue investigating alternate single or shared-use routes in the area to provide a separate hiking route or alternate multi-use routes to other destinations.
Thank you again for your support. It’s the only way these things happen.
