San Rafael Fixes Deadly Intersection After MCBC Rally

San Rafael has announced safety upgrades at the intersection of Freitas Parkway and Lea Drive, where beloved cycling coach Christopher Brignetti was killed in June. Brignetti, 54, was a coach for the Terra Linda High School mountain biking team and a highly experienced cyclist.

On July 21st, MCBC brought nearly 100 supporters to the steps of City Hall. Family, friends, and fellow advocates demanded urgent changes. Our advocacy prompted swift city action.

So far, the city has installed a stop sign for the left-turn lane on Freitas Parkway and a rubber curb island to calm traffic. More changes are on the way, including a 25 mph speed limit sign, a notice warning drivers of oncoming cyclists, and additional stop signs

Our work is far from done.

At MCBC, we thank the City for its response and invite it to do even more for its cycling community. The intersection had a troubling history: four bicyclists were injured in similar collisions between 2018 and 2023. It should not have taken a fatality for action to be taken.
