MCBC News Top Ten Wins in 2024

Back again due to popular demand, and in the spirit of End Of The Year Top Ten Countdowns everywhere…our annual Top Ten Wins in 2024 for biking in Marin – each accomplishment made possible by your support!

BE PROUD! AS AN MCBC MEMBER, YOU HELPED MAKE THIS GOODNESS POSSIBLE!  Thank you!

10 – 32 elementary schools participated in Ruby Bridges Walk and Roll to School Day organized by Safe Routes to Schools.  In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges helped to end segregation at an all-white school. Ruby Bridges Day is important for connecting transportation and justice in our work, elevating the need for safe access for all cyclists of all means and abilities.

9 – Securing the protected bikeway on Redwood Highway south of the new Corte Madera Creek Bridge. This project extends the bridge path by 300 yards and will connect to a future project between Industrial Way and Wornum Drive. This project would not have moved forward without members like you, who helped MCBC take fast action last fall to save the path.

8 – Every public elementary school in Marin received bicycle safety education, and more than 54,000 K-12 students walked or biked to school through the Safe Routes to Schools Program.

7 – Volunteers donated over 2,000 hours in 2024!  People like you advocating for safer streets, trail access on Mt. Tam, keeping riders safe, fed, and happy at events, and helping with programs that get more kids on bikes. Thank you!

6 – Eagle Rock Trail in Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Preserve opened to bikes – which unlocks a vital connection to the ridgeline.

5 – More than 40 teens received e-bike safety education through MCBC’s E-Bike Smart Marin classes.

4 – The long-awaited two-way bikeway on 2nd Street in San Rafael opened. This critical project facilitates east-west travel through San Rafael and provides a protected route on busy 2nd Street. MCBC members like you were instrumental in bringing this project to the top of the list and ensuring it survived several challenges.

3 – This year, Cory’s Ride program helped spread the joy of bicycling to 50 new students in under-resourced communities with free, fully equipped bikes of their own, classes, rides, and community. And Bikefest came to the Canal Neighbourhood, where we repaired over 65 bikes and gave out over 100 bikes and helmets.

2 – The newest segment of the SMART pathway opened in Terra Linda between the Civic Center SMART station and Smith Ranch Road. This project saves nearly a mile of travel and provides a safe, separate ride through the marsh instead of sharing the road with high-speed traffic on Redwood Highway. The project is the first segment of the SMART path to open in Marin in nearly four years, and we’re hoping for more in the near future!

1 – At long last, Legal Single Track on Mt. Tam was approved by the Water District – (even though this is being held up by litigation, we believe we will prevail in the courts).

Did you know:  70% of MCBC’s $1.4M budget comes from people like you?  Thank you for making this work possible!

From the entire staff of Marin County Bicycle Coalition and Safe Routes to Schools, a big “Thank You!” to everyone who took the time to pitch in, volunteer, contact their elected officials, and make an effort to be part of the MCBC experience this past year!

With your help and enthusiasm, we look forward to even better things in 2025!
