East Sir Francis Drake Bay Trail Gap Closure

Connecting Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to Larkspur

Key Facts

Location: East Sir Francis Drake between the intersection of ESFD/Andersen Drive/I-580 EB on-ramp and Remillard Park, where the Bay Trail currently ends
Managing Agency: Marin County Department of Public Works
Cost: TBD. Will depend on the alternative selected, and design of the ESFD/Andersen/I-580 intersection.
Funding: $700k for planning and preliminary design (Rep. Huffman earmark, 2022). Final design and construction unfunded.
Status: In Design
Project Update: Project kicked off planning and design in May 2025. Public meetings to follow.

Benefits of the Project

There is currently no all-ages-and-abilities route between the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and Larkspur Ferry, along with its nearby connections to Marin’s multi-use path network. East Sir Francis Drake currently has no pedestrian accommodations, and riders must use a shoulder next to high-speed traffic. This project would close the 0.6-mile gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail by constructing either a multi-use path or a sidewalk paired with protected bike lanes.

What You Can Do
