Project Insights

SMART – Puerto Suello Hill Pathway

Linking Terra Linda and Downtown San Rafael

Key Facts

Type: Class 1 multiuse path
Location: Between the top of the Lincoln Hill Pathway and the intersection of Los Ranchitos Road/N San Pedro Road
Managing Agency: SMART
Cost: TBD. 2022 Feasibility study estimated project at $5.5M.
Funding: $540k for planning, permitting and design from SMART. Construction unfunded.
Status: In Design
Project Update: At March 2025 meeting, SMART Board signed contract to complete design and permitting.

Benefits of the Project

The project would close a gap in the SMART path, connecting Terra Linda and Downtown San Rafael with a continuous multi-use path. Today, there is no ADA-compliant pedestrian route, and bicyclists must choose between busy Los Rachitos Road and the very steep route on Merrydale Road. This path would provide switchbacks that create a gentle climb separate from motor vehicle traffic.
