Safe Routes to Schools: Encouraging Safe, Active Transportation

A History of Success in Marin County

Founded by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition in 2000, SR2S was one of two national pilot programs funded by grants from the Marin Community Foundation, California Department of Health, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Within just two years, the percentage of students walking and biking to school increased from 21% to 38% across 14 schools.

In 2004, Marin voters approved a transportation sales tax, dedicating 11% of funds to Safe Routes to Schools infrastructure and crossing guards. The Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) now oversees the program, with MCBC continuing to lead education and encouragement efforts.

Today, Safe Routes to Schools serves 60 public and private schools across Marin, equipping tens of thousands of students with the skills to safely bike and walk. With over 50% of students using active or shared commutes, the program plays a vital role in reducing traffic congestion and pollution while promoting health and safety.
