Our Work Widened Bike/Ped Pathway Over Corte Madera Creek To Begin Construction in 2020
After lengthy delays tied to permitting, a widened multi-use pathway over Corte Madera Creek (between Redwood Highway and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Larkspur) is expected to begin construction this Fall and will be complete in Summer/Fall 2021.
The 12-foot wide multi-use pathway will be a welcomed improvement over the busy 4-foot wide sidewalk along the northbound 101 off-ramp. The sidewalk will remain open during construction.
The pathway will be supported using existing concrete “bents” that protrude from the structure and will include refuge/viewing areas, as shown above.
This project and others–including the Central Marin Ferry Connector Bridge over Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and new multi-use pathway between Andersen Dr. and Rice Dr. in San Rafael–benefited from the abandonment of the Greenbrae freeway interchange project in 2013. At that time, MCBC staff, Patrick Seidler of Transportation Alternatives of Marin, and County Supervisor Steve Kinsey worked together to ensure the funds would go toward bike/ped improvements in the area.
Following delivery of the improved creek crossing, the City of Larkspur will construct a multi-use pathway along the Redwood Highway frontage road connecting to the pedestrian overcrossing that leads to Nellen Avenue/Lucky Drive (completing the “northern segment” shown in the map below). Transportation Authority of Marin and the County of Marin will also resume their search for funds to build a multi-use pathway on the former rail alignment, which runs along the marshes between Corte Madera Creek and Wornum Drive (shown as the “southern segment” in the map below).
Combined, these improvements will mark the completion of Marin’s North-South Greenway between Corte Madera and Terra Linda. Remaining gaps to the south include Alto Tunnel (Corte Madera to Mill Valley) and the Gate 6 to Ferry Terminal multi-use pathway (Sausalito), while nearly seven miles of unbuilt SMART pathway sections remain to the north.
