Events Throughout Marin iWalk – International Walk to School Day Takes Place Wednesday 10/4

With parades of families, bike trains and and escorting fire trucks, Safe Routes to Schools Marin will lead events for this year’s iWalk – International Walk to School Day – at 50 Marin schools this Wednesday, October 4. Marin’s bike paths and idyllic weather affords walking and biking options that are serene, safe and healthy – we need only to choose to use them.

Traffic congestion is created by humans and we can retire it, humanely. iWalk provides the opportunity, a day of action while reflecting on the implications of technology on our planet.

iWalk is a time to celebrate of all that has been accomplished. 14,700 Marin students walk, bike, bus or carpool to school daily. Those numbers are increasing due to the vast efforts of parent and school volunteers that implement Safe Routes to Schools. iWalk will have fire trucks escorting parades of families, Principals leading bike trains, and families walking hand in hand developing memories and habits for a healthy life.

The purpose of iWalk is to encourage families to use their own foot power to get to school. The increased physical activity in the morning wakes up the brain for learning. It promotes physical health and mental clarity. On a broader scale, iWalk celebrates human compassion for the environment and reminds us that our personal humanity matters through interconnectedness achieved in walking and cycling together.
