MCBC 2017 Speaker Series MCBC Speaker Series: Getting to Yes – Overcoming NIMBYism for Safer Streets

When it comes time to put plans into action, resistance can seem to come out of nowhere. On Tuesday, August 1, learn how cities and advocates are teaming up to help people imagine streets as more than conduits for traffic when Julie Flynn of The Street Plans Collaborative will speak at Mike’s Bikes in San Rafael during MCBC’s second Cycling Speaker Series event of the summer.

Flynn will outline her and others’ work transforming streets around the world into safer and more vibrant places. Armed with temporary paint, cones, and planter boxes, cities from San Francisco to Bentonville, Arkansas have found a way to settle fears. Pilot projects allow cities to better understand impacts before plans are finalized. Perhaps more importantly, they enable people to reimagine streets as more than conduits for traffic.

The presentation – “Getting to Yes: Overcoming NIMBYism En Route to Safer Streets” – will appeal to a broad audience of advocates, elected officials, and city staff interested in removing the guesswork and uphill battle faced when making bicycling improvements to local streets.

This has particular resonance in Marin, where resistance to change can be particularly strong, often pitting necessary safety improvements against perceived parking or traffic impacts.

Those who attend will be treated to complimentary refreshments, including wine from Clif Family Winery, beer from Lagunitas Brewing Co., and other refreshments and appetizers from Good Earth Natural Foods.
