Advocacy Support a Federal Tax Credit for E-Bikes

Earlier this week, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) and Congressional Bike Caucus Chair Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced the Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act (E-BIKE). This act, if passed, would create a tax credit for individuals and families purchasing an electric bicycle. The tax credit would:

  • Cover 30% of the cost of an e-bike, up to $1,500

  • Apply to new e-bikes that cost less than $8,000

  • Be fully refundable, meaning that it applies for low-income users

MCBC believes that e-bikes are a key part of a more bike-friendly world. E-bikes make riding accessible to a wider range of people by flattening hills and shortening distances. They also make carrying heavier loads such groceries or children much easier, encouraging people to choose to bike rather than drive for short trips.

By shifting even a small number of trips to e-bikes, Marin can drastically reduce its carbon footprint, allowing people to travel in a way that’s clean, green, quiet, and takes up less space on the road. Reducing the cost of e-bikes, one of the primary barriers to entry, will allow more people to become part of the e-bike revolution.
