news Baker-Barry Tunnel Closure Begins January 2
The Baker-Barry Tunnel (AKA “the 5 Minute Tunnel), a primary route for cyclists to the Marin Headlands and Cronkhite Beach, will be closed for an extended preservation project beginning Monday, January 2, 2017. (UPDATE: These dates have changed – please visit http://go.nps.gov/tunnel for the most recent closure announcements.)
The tunnel will be closed seven days a week to all users, including vehicles and bicycles through early May 2017. The National Park Service has established a web page for project updates: http://go.nps.gov/tunnel

Safer Surfaces – Better Lighting
Anyone who has ever ridden throught this historic tunnel knows that the route can be a little dicey. This Baker-Barry Tunnel preservation project will bring safer surfaces and better lighting to the tunnel interior.
Current cracks and leaks in the tunnel result in a slippery film of sediment that creates a safety hazard. A new tunnel LED light system will reduce energy use by an estimated 40% and create better illumination in the tunnel. The project will also replace water and sewer lines mounted in the tunnel. The outdated waterand sewer lines are subject to frequent breaks, resulting in tunnel closures.
