news County Parks Video Highlights Measure A Results

Measure A protects the parks, opens spaces, and farmland that make Marin an extraordinary place to live, work, and play. By law, Measure A’s quarter-cent sales tax supports projects and programs that benefit parks, open space, and agricultural lands across Marin. The County of Marin is committed to keeping its promise, to manage these funds responsibly, and to take care streams, marshes, trails and parks that make Marin so special.

MCBC endorsed Measure A in November 2012, stating that a YES vote would ensure funds to “acquire new land for trail connections and new access for mountain bikes.” The momentum of MCBC member support helped pass the measure by a whopping 74%! With the increased funding Marin County Parks has doubled the size of their trail building capacity, which has already resulted in 3.5 miles of new bike-legal trails. More trails are under construction and enhancements have been made to existing trails, such as reroute of “The Plunge” on Old Railroad Grade Trail in Fairfax, featured in the video above.

When Measure A was passed in 2012, trail projects remained on hold until the adoption of the Road and Trail Management Plan (RTMP) in December of 2014, and the Initial Road and Trail Designation process, which began in 2015. MCBC staff and members continued to show up throughout the process and keep pressure on.

Following the completion of these two actions, Marin County Open Space was able to start implementing new trail projects in 2016. They have opened 3.5 miles of new trails in Mill Valley and San Geronimo, with another two miles of trail under construction now.

In addition, the recently announced Region 4 Road and Trail Designation will increase bike trail access by 5 miles in the Novato area. And there are additional projects under review in Marinwood and Fairfax that will add increase access by another 5 miles. That is real progress made possible by Measure A funds!
