News Downtowns Around Marin Go Car-Free As Businesses Reopen
Downtown streets throughout Marin will have a more European look and feel this summer, as cities go car-free to create space for people to dine outdoors.
Nearly all of Marin’s cities and towns have approved ordinances allowing businesses to expand operations into adjacent public spaces, including on and off-street parking. Several–including Novato, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Tiburon, and Sausalito–have gone a step further to completely close portions of their main streets to cars weekly for the entire summer (locations and dates listed below).
“We commend the towns throughout Marin who are reimagining their streets to be more people-centric and keep local businesses afloat,” said Tarrell Kullaway, MCBC Executive Director. “We look forward to seeing more families arriving to our town centers by bike, experiencing a heightened quality of life that isn’t possible on gridlocked streets or while dealing with the headache of finding parking.”
MCBC encourages everyone to walk and bike (while practicing safe social distancing) to support local businesses this summer.
