MMB 2018 Speaker Series Grasshopper Adventure Series – The First 20 Years

Miguel Crawford, creator of the Grasshopper Adventure Series in Northern California will present the history of these amazing rides (so far!) on Thursday, April 26 at the Marin Museum of Bicycling. The unique Grasshopper races cover a wide range of terrain. The rides call for a variety of bicycle types, sometimes more than one for a single event, and have helped spark interest in “gravel riding” and creation of a new genre of “adventure bike.” Miguel will share lore and images gathered over the Hopper’s 20 fun-filled years.

Crawford grew up in Sebastopol, steeped in the fertile design, framebuilding, riding and racing cultures of Sonoma and Marin. The Grasshopper rides, he says, “were born from my love of riding and creating the perfect combination of road and dirt to challenge person and machine.” He’ll discuss how the Hoppers evolved, why they’ve been enduring, and what’s ahead.

Hoppers are technically not races, but they are timed and they draw an experienced and competitive field to the varied and demanding courses. Crawford offers that the rides are “fun, often very long and hard, magical mystery tours through the diverse, challenging and eclectic hills of Sonoma County and beyond.” Crawford says, “The Grasshopper is about bicycle diversity, artistry in movement, and above all personal challenge, perseverance and self sufficiency.”

Tickets are $10 per adult ($5 for students and Marin Museum of Bicycling members). Tickets can be purchased in advance at the museum (Thursdays-Sundays, 11-5) and online at https://mmbhof.org/events/. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door the evening of the event. Advance purchase is recommended. All proceeds benefit the Marin Museum of Bicycling.
