MCBC Local Teams Get Involved in Safer Streets at the Local Level: Join YOUR Local Team!
In the fall of 2022, MCBC kicked off a new program called “Local Teams.” Modeled on a similar effort from our friends at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, we’ve trained many great volunteers on the ins and outs of city government. We currently have volunteer teams working in San Rafael and Mill Valley, as well as teams focused on the Alto Tunnel and the Golden Gate Bridge. Get Involved in safer streets at the local level and join an MCBC Local Team.
Want to get involved but don’t see a team in your community? We’re always looking to expand Local Teams to new areas, so please join our meetings or reach out and let us know where you’d like to see the next MCBC Local Team! Staff experts are with you every step of the way, providing guidance and support so you can make a difference in your community.
Local Teams meet once a month on Zoom. The first team meeting of 2024 will be on Monday, February 26, at 6 PM. Click here to register for the meeting. We hope to see you there!

Wins
Improving our streets is hard work, and we at MCBC can’t do it on our own. We need the help and local expertise of the people who actually live in our cities and towns. When we work together, we can do great things! Here are examples of some of our exciting local team wins from the last year:
- Secured a grant to provide valet bike parking at San Rafael farmers market
- Urged San Rafael to start the process of lowering speed limits on 4th Street
- Widened bike lane in Terra Linda
- Submitted 1,000 signatures asking for a safer Alexander Avenue
- 1800+ petition signatures and 20 organizations signed a letter of support for the Alto Tunnel
Program updates
While we’re thrilled about our wins, we know we can do more! That’s why we’re making a few changes to the program to help out our current (and potential!) local team members.
Consolidating Meetings
Rather than have our various team meetings on different days and times, all MCBC local team meetings will now take place on the same evening, the 4th Monday of each month, on Zoom. This makes things more predictable for attendees and staff. Our first consolidated meeting will occur on Monday, February 26th at 6 PM. Register here. See the rest of the year’s calendar here (note: this will not apply to Alto Tunnel meetings).
Trainer Talk Speaker Series
To provide useful information for our volunteers and to keep everyone learning, we’re booking speakers to give a quick talk before every Local Teams meeting. Trainer Talks will take place at 6:00 PM and different topics will be discussed each month. At 6:30 PM, attendees will go to breakout rooms based on their local team.
In-Person Meetups
We know that not everything can happen on Zoom, so we will continue to help our local teams organize in-person events and rides. Look out for more announcements about those going forward.
Moving Forward, Together
In order to build a movement for bicycling in Marin, we have to build capacity and power in our communities. This is what our Local Teams program is meant to do. We’re happy with the achievements we have already made and plan to keep adjusting the program to make it as effective as possible. If you have been thinking of attending a meeting but haven’t yet, now is the perfect time to become an MCBC Local Team member! Click here to go to our Local Teams page.
