Annual Ride & Post-Ride Gathering Repack Fire Road Closure on Thanksgiving Day
If you decide to head out onto the trails this Thursday to build up an appetite, please be aware that Cascade Canyon/Repack Fire Road will be closed from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day, November 24.
That means that if you plan to take a traditional Thanksgiving Day ride on Thursday, please choose a route that avoids Repack Fire Road.
For riders enjoying the Pine Mountain Loop, the best alternate route is to turn left at White Hill Fire Road off San Geronimo Ridge, where waffles and hot drinks are often available. This will drop you down to Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and back to Fairfax.
However you enjoy the trails that morning – make sure that after riding, you join the Thanksgiving Day gathering at the Marin Museum of Bicycling parking lot at 1965 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Beverages and Clif Bars available while supplies last!
MCBC and Friends of Corte Madera Creek have submitted a joint proposal (editor’s note: see below for breaking news!) to place bridges over the San Anselmo Creek in Cascade Canyon to keep all visitors out of the creek year round. At a public workshop held in Fairfax last September it was disclosed that salmonids were found in Cascade Canyon this summer. As the photo below shows, there is water in the creek now and sediment is visible at the bottom of the photo. Bridges would reduce the chance of fine dirt getting into the rocky creek bed, which can disrupt eggs laid by federal and state protected trout and steelhead.

BREAKING NEWS:
11/23/16: Marin County Parks has approved the MCBC/Friends of Corte Madera Creek Watershed proposal to construct two recreational multi-use bridges and adopt a change in use on a segment of the Canyon Trail in Cascade Canyon Open Space Preserve. This follows from an effort to reduce the impact to steelhead, which are federally protected and spawn in San Anselmo Creek at the base of the famous fire road.
Construction of the San Anselmo Creek bridges will allow the Marin County Open Space District to decommission the High Water Trail, which does not meet safety standards. It is anticipated that construction of the Cascade Canyon bridges will begin in summer 2017.
In November 2011, MCBC voiced support for the closure of Repack Fire Road on Thanksgiving – pledging at the time to find a solution to get all users out of the creek.
