The Grijalva family, who live in the Canal in San Rafael, did not realize the many benefits coming their way as a result of their participation in a Safe Routes to Schools’ educational video called “Savvy Family Cycling.”

The Grijalvas are a big family: two parents with four children, and a baby on the way. “It is hard to keep the kids busy when there are not many places to go,” said mom Zoila Rios, referring to the ongoing situation during the Covid-19 pandemic. Keeping the kids active and entertained was a big issue until the family discovered the joys of bicycling. Bicycling simultaneously provides entertainment, fitness, and sanity for families during this difficult time.
As a matter of fact, biking was one of the first activities the Grijalvas took to at the beginning of the lockdown. Back in March, five-year old Esmeralda, who is just starting kindergarten, learned to ride her bike. Shortly after (and to the surprise of her parents), she took the training wheels off her bike by herself. The Safe Routes’ video shoot presented Esmeralda with the opportunity to show off her ability to control her bike including avoiding pedestrians, coming to a complete stop, and following instructions. Her older brother, Emerson, who is eight, did not feel as confident riding without training wheels. However, according to their mom, Esmeralda’s dexterity during the filming inspired Emerson to finally ditch his training wheels a few days later, which he had been dreading for a while.
Since the Grijalvas also have many relatives around Marin, the family showed up to the set of the video shooting at Pickleweed Park with two aunts and a couple of cousins. All of them said that participating in the project was a lot of fun. But more than just a novel activity to keep them occupied during an afternoon, the video shoot was an opportunity for them to learn valuable information about navigating the streets on a bike.
The first thing they all learned upon arrival was the life-saving importance of wearing a helmet and how to put on a helmet correctly. They also learned how to correctly fit a bicycle for every family member. Safe Routes to Schools’ Peggy Clark taught them key rules of the road that they did not know; for example, they learned the need to get off their bikes when crossing a street and the parents learned how to tell when a child is ready to ride on the street. The afternoon activity gave the Grijalva children the knowledge and the enthusiasm to ride their bikes to their school, Bahia Vista Elementary, once it reopens.
The Savvy Family Cycling video was done as part of a comprehensive plan to make all of Safe Routes’ curriculum available online during the pandemic. La Familia Grijalva del Canal en San Rafael no sabía todas los beneficios que recibirían a consecuencia de su participación en un video educational de Rutas Seguras a las Escuelas llamado “Ciclismo Familiar Inteligente”.

Los Grijalva tienen una gran familia: dos padres con cuatro hijos y un bebé más en camino. “Es difícil mantener a los niños ocupados cuando no hay donde ir”, dijo la mamá, Zoila Ríos, al referirse a la actual situación con la pandemia del Covid-19. Allí fue cuando el ciclismo se convirtió en una opción fenomenal para familias como ellos, al proveer simultáneamente entretenimiento, ejercicio… y cordura en los hogares durante esta época tan difícil.
De hecho, el ciclismo fue una de las primeras actividades que adoptaron al principio de la orden de quedarse en casa. En marzo pasado, Esmeralda, de cinco años de edad y quien entra a Kindergarten este otoño, aprendió a montar en bicicleta. Poco después –y para sorpresa de sus padres— ella misma le quitó las rueditas auxiliares a su bicicleta. La grabación del video le dió a Esmeralda la oportunidad de demostrar sus recién adquiridas habilidades ciclísticas al esquivar peatones, parar en seco y seguir instrucciones. Uno de sus hermanos mayores, Emerson, de ocho años, no tenía el mismo grado de seguridad en su
bicicleta. Sin embargo, cuenta la mamá, que la destreza de Esmeralda durante la filmación inspiró a Emerson unos días después para finalmente dejar las rueditas auxiliares, lo cual él estuvo temiendo por un tiempo.
Como los Grijalva tienen muchos parientes que viven cerca, se aparecieron en el lugar de la grabación, en el Parque Pickleweed, con dos tías y un par de primitos. Todos ellos manifestaron haberla pasado muy bien con el proyecto. Pero más que una actividad novedosa qué hacer por una tarde, fue una oportunidad para que todos ellos aprendieran valiosa información para recorrer las calles en sus bicicletas. La primera cosa que aprendieron al llegar fue la importancia del casco para salvar vidas y cómo ponérselo correctamente. También se les indicó cuál es el tamaño correcto de la bicicleta para cada miembro de la familia. Una vez aprendieron esto, Peggy Clark, quien trabaja con Rutas Seguras, les explicó reglas clave de la carretera que la familia desconocía, tales como la necesidad de bajarse de la cicla para cruzar la calle, y cómo los padres pueden saber si sus hijos están listos para tener autonomía en sus bicicletas en la calle. Esta actividad de una tarde le proporcionó a los niños Grijalva el conocimiento y el entusiasmo para ir en bicicleta a su escuela, Bahía Vista Elementary, una vez vuelva a abrir.
