40 volunteers contribute 200 hours of service! Strong MTB Turnout Tends to Big Rock on Trail Day!

Though it seems we haven’t seen much of it this year, even the Sun showed up for the first Trail Day of 2017 on Big Rock Ridge on Saturday, January 31!

Led by a number of ever-enthusiastic MCBC Volunteers, a team of 40 trail stewards and Open Space staff conducted maintenance of the Big Rock Trail following a fall rehab project. The Marin County Open Space trail crew, under the leadership of David Frazier, had regraded the trail surface from the the upper reaches all the way down to Lucas Valley Road.

They added much needed rolling dips to wick water off the trail and reduce the chances of thick mud building up on the trail. Much of that work left a steep cut bank, which can slump down onto the trail if it’s not scaled back to a gentler slope.

The main group of volunteers joined a crew of 6 Open Space and OneTam staff members to remove  any slumps and angle the back slope of the trail in order to avoid future slides onto the tread. A smaller team of volunteers tackled a large slide that had covered an entire segment trail, while a few others cut back vegetation in the forested areas.

Thanks to every MCBC, Access4Bikes and Open Space volunteer who came out! In just one day, you contributed 200 hours of service!

And thanks to Firehouse Subs in Novato for providing lunch! Nothing builds up an appetite like trail work!
