Culvert Project Finished Cross-Marin Path Receives Finishing Boost
With a few minor aspects to touch up, the Cross-Marin Path is now once again complete and accessible to all cyclists and other users. For the last five years MCBC has received numerous emails from members who had to negotiate a section at the Jewel Trail junction, where a culvert failure forced bicyclists to walk or go off-road.The Marin Municipal Water District took the lead on prioritizing the project to get the pathway collapse fixed. However, the restoration of the Cross Marin Path would not have been completed without the generous efforts of Marin Cyclists, Maggiora & Ghilotti Construction and MCBC.
Look for an upcoming official ride and opening celebration, but in the meantime, get out there and ride it now!
Note: Some additional patch work is planned for this winter and may result in day-long closures.
Crews replaced a failed corrugated metal pipe culvert which ran underneath the Cross Marin Trail at Jewell Creek. The decayed bottom affected fish passage at this location. MMWD’s Nicasio water transmission line, located above the failing culvert, was also at risk and could have been damaged if the culvert failed.
The open-bottom arch culvert, improves fish passage in Jewell Creek as well as restoring the Cross Marin Trail and stabilizing the Nicasio transmission line in the project vicinity.
The Cross Marin Trail meanders along the old North Coast Pacific Railroad grade which once ran between Larkspur to Cazadero. The trail is paved for a portion and runs through Samuel P. Taylor State Park on California State Park lands where users can stroll or bike along majestic redwood trees adjacent to Lagunitas Creek, home to endangered coho salmon and steelhead.
