Project Insights

Open Alto Tunnel

Fixing the biggest gap in Marin’s bikeway network

Key Facts

Type: Class 1 multiuse path
Location: Between Edna McGuire School in Mill Valley and Menke Park in Corte Madera, connecting the existing multiuse paths
Managing Agency: Marin County
Cost: $65M
Funding: None
Status: Planned
Project Update: Several studies completed in 2010s evaluating potential use, necessary property rights, and detailed investigation of tunnel condition. Project requires preliminary engineering and environmental review to start seeking construction grant funding.

Benefits of the Project

At present, to ride or walk between southern and central Marin requires climbing over 200′ and several miles of out-of-direction travel. By reopening the tunnel and connecting multi-use paths on both sides, bike travel would be shortened by 10-15 minutes, and walking would be reduced by 45 minutes to an hour. Unlike the existing route, which requires riding or walking on busy, steep roads, the tunnel would be ADA-compliant as well as completely safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
